Jewish Heritage

* * * *

The so-called ghetto next to the central market is the best-known proof of Jewish heritage in Trier. Here we witness how Jews were attracted and expelled during the time of the archbishops.

The centre of the community was always the synagogue. In Trier we know about several buildings at various places as well as the locations of several Jewish cemeteries.

In the 19th century, Jews were well integrated into the German society. Karl Marx, too, elected "greatest citizen of Trier of all times" had Jewish ancestors.

The holocaust left traces, too in Trier. Testimonials of it are the so-called "tumbling stones" all over town. They amount to 165 now [ 2014].
